What is the PMBOK Guide?
A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge,” (PMBOK® Guide)is the accepted professional standard for managing projects. Accordingly, most questions on the PMP Exam are based on information presented in the PMBOK® Guide. As a PMP candidate, it is essential to understand the intent, context and content of the Guide.
The PMBOK® Guide is not a learning text, however. It is not easy to read and understand. Some candidates report having to read the Guide several times before they begin to develop an understanding of how all the information integrates to form a logical sequence. Our learning process was developed so that you will learn the intent, context and content of the PMBOK® Guide, in a logical, easy to understand, practical manner.
Understanding the PMBOK® Guide equates to understanding “modern project management.” By mastering the information in our exam prep guides, you will intuitively understand the proper context of most PMP exam questions. This ability alone, coupled with your practical experience, will enable you to answer most Exam questions correctly.
The primary purpose of the PMBOK® Guide is to identify and describe generally accepted knowledge and practices that are applicable to most projects, most of the time. It must be understood that these generally accepted practices are not expected to be applied uniformly on all projects. It is always up to the project team to determine what is most appropriate for any given project.
Although we have been teaching project management for more than fifteen years, the project management profession is still emerging. As can be expected, there is little commonality around terms throughout the profession. A secondary purpose of the PMBOK® Guide is to help provide a common lexicon.
